Going from a peak of more than 40,000 annual deaths, 2008 saw a significant decline in drunk driving across thirty-two states. But a new wave in accidental death is crashing into public awareness. In what promises to be a much disputed cause& effect célèbre, deaths from drug use, in twelve states, have now surpassed drunken driving deaths.

The statistics are indeed becoming frightening: drug deaths have increased 65% in the period of 1999 through 2004. While traffic deaths have continued a downward trend, with a single-year aberrant jump (2008), drug induced deaths show no sign of diminishing.

Almost three decades ago, a book was widely condemned for supposedly undermining advances in child welfare and abuse prevention. The book (“The Child Abuse Industry”) was a scathing attack on the state of child protective services, variously known as “CPS” around the nation…until, that is, lawsuits such as in Florida—to use one example—have caused bureaucrats to run for cover from public wrath.

Amidst charges of running wild, CPS programs seem to be unable to do enough, or of trying to do too much.

The current trial of a man in Idaho raises thorny questions of when does parental stupidity deserve to be a crime. Robert Aragon’s truck broke down in the midst of a typically cold Idaho winter in December of 2008…not so typically, the 55-year old father of two told his children (11 and 12) to walk the many miles to their destination.

Los Angeles Sex Offense

in the name of the father.....

Los Angeles sex offenses have a variety of penalties, including jail time, probation, orders of protection, placement on the California Sex Offender Registry and more.  When a Los Angeles sex offense involves an authority figure, the level of hostility toward the alleged perpetrator increases.  For example, certain members of the Los Angeles archdiocese have been implicated in Los Angeles sex offense crime, linking them to the molestation of children over the last twenty or thirty years.

Parazzi, Stalking and George Clooney

George Clooney

One actor who has had it in for the paparazzi for quite some time is George Clooney.  Clooney blamed the paparazzi for Princess Diana's death over a decade ago, and has had repeated run-ins with the paparazzi around the world.  At the Law Offices of Stephen G. Rodriguez, our paparazzi lawyer team defends against such charges, no matter how difficult the charges might seem to defend.

In a recent case in Italy, Clooney claims that the paparazzi climbed over the wall at home where he was staying, shot photos of a nude 13-year-old girl who was changing, as well as of Clooney and his girlfriend.  The photos were printed in two magazines, and Clooney is bringing civil charges against the photographer and the two magazines.  In such a case, a paparazzi lawyer would be absolutely necessary to protect against any potential criminal action.

Stalking and Drug Possession for Pro Wrestler

Kurt Angle & Shawn Michaels

Kurt Angle was once a main attraction for Olympic wrestling and professional wrestling, drawing crowds in the tens of thousands to see him grapple with some of the top athletes in the world.  These days however, his ex-girlfriend is doing her best to avoid Mr. Angle and his harassing, stalking ways.

Angle has been charged with drug possession and violating an order of protection in Pennsylvania.  His former girlfriend called the police, claiming that Angle was circling the coffee shop she was in with his car.  When police pulled him over, they found HGH, an illegal steroid, in his car. Angle, 40, was charged with violating the order of protection, harassment, possession of drugs and paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license.  Angle is a two-time NCAA Division 1 wrestling champion, an Olympic gold medalist in wrestling and a successful, popular professional wrestler.

Weapons Possession Charges Dismissed for NFL Player

Burress Makes the Catch

New York Giants line backer Antonio Pierce narrowly avoided being charged with weapons possession stemming from an incident in 2008 involving fellow Giants team mate Plaxico Burress. Reports of the incident maintain that Burress was carrying an unlicensed, illegal firearm in a New York night club when the gun accidentally went off, shooting Burress in the thigh. Pierce, for his part, helped his team mate out of the club and to a local hospital where he was treated under an assumed name.  Pierce later drove back to his New Jersey home with the gun in question in his glove box and later arranged to have it delivered back to Burress at his home, actions which could have seen him charged with illegal possession of a firearm under New York state laws. One week ago a Manhattan grand jury decided not to indict him on criminal weapons possession charges.

Los Angeles Murder of USC Student Rocks the City

University of Southern California Bovard Administration Building

When a Los Angeles criminal defense attorney has to defend a murder case, he usually has to battle with the stigma of his client and the media's take on the Los Angeles murder.  A recent Los Angeles murder of a USC student has police, the media and others in an uproar.

The area right around USC is known as a dangerous neighborhood, and when a USC student was confronted by a 25-year-old warehouse worker, the result was, unfortunately, another alleged Los Angeles murder.  The alleged murderer pleaded not guilty and faces 26 years in jail if convicted.  He claims he stabbed the USC student in self defense, not as an attacker.

Felony Assault Charges in Southern California

California Prisons

Lawrence Phillips was once the pride of the Nebraska Cornhuskers football team, wracking up touchdowns and yards at will.  However, over the last twelve years, the running back has had frequent run ins with the law, and now faces up to 25 years in jail for felony assault.

Phillips stands accused in a San Diego court of choking his girlfriend twice, once into unconsciousness in 2005.  He is already serving a 10 year sentence for running down and hitting some teenagers in Los Angeles with his car.  The felony assault charges he is facing are in addition to other felony charges.

Vehicular Manslaughter in California

Sunday Driver

Los Angeles criminal defense attorneys represent people facing all manner of criminal charges, and sometimes these charges can be quite gruesome.  For example, a woman in Bakersfield was run down and killed by a motorist who was allegedly under the influence.  The young man who hit the woman (a mother of eight) fled the scene, only to be picked up by police a short time later.

The man is being charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while driving under the influence, hit and run and felony DUI.  In such a case as this, the penalties could include tremendous fines, years in prison and much more.  The man's bail is $130,000, an incredible amount for most people.

Now, Live From New York….

New Jersey is not what it used to be. The time was, virtually every geography joke on “SNL” had its roots in New Jersey.

Presidential Pardoning

When the president speaks, we listen…and so when President Grant once commented on the evidence in a pending criminal case, the newspapers quickly covered the story. And given Grant’s predilection for liquor, Obama’s recent meeting at the White House hardly turns the Rose Garden into a beer garden.

Los Angeles Sex Crime Truth

A Cigarette, Platform Shoes and a Finger

Los Angeles sex crime consists of a variety of charges, everything from sexual abuse of a minor to prostitution.  Los Angeles sex crime is a broad category, and it usually involves the types of activity that need rehabilitation and not incarceration.
